Philosophy of Technology Symposium - May 27th, 7pm ET

James Hartree2 min read

The Better Argument Magazine is pleased to announce our first Philosophy of Technology Symposium, on the topic 'How technology constructs our lives.'

Three papers will be presented by our writers -

Dr. Kem-Laurin Lubin - "Who the machine says you are" on how algorithms construct a 'character' of an individual, determining their hirability, recidivism probability, and consumer preferences.

Benjamin Scott - "Technological Niche Construction" on how the development of technology can be better interpreted through the construction model of evolutionary biology.

Bryan Dawson - "Digital Artifacts and the Collapse of the Arendtian Public Realm" on how digital social spaces are impermanent and transient, and the effect this has on public life.

We recommend you read the papers before the event!

Each talk will run between 5 and 10 minutes, and will be followed up by breakout rooms for discussion and question generating, culminating in an open discussion that synthesizes the papers.

If technology is already shaping who we are, the question is whether we are willing to think clearly about it. Join us on May 27th at 7pm ET over zoom to be a part of the conversation!

Fill out this short signup form below, so that we can send you the invitation.
